Acne Caused by Skin Care Products
3-minute read
My client Qenna had the most common type of acne - breakouts caused by skin care products.
She was a "product junkie" and tried every popular skin brand available, including professional acne products recommended by her esthetician and dermatologist. No matter what new product she used or how much money she spent, her skin kept getting worse.
Sound familiar?
When you have acne, pore-clogging ingredients in skin care products cause 90% of the breakouts in your skin. That's right - 90%! It's the most common and yet most overlooked cause of acne, and the main reason your breakouts keep coming back no matter what you do.
Did you know that even ONE clogging ingredient will cause acne?
Let's take a look at another client and what one ingredient did to her skin. She used the prescription cream Retin-A for her acne, which has only one clogging ingredient in it, isopropyl myristate. But that's all it took to cause breakouts in her skin.
That one ingredient not only prevented her acne from clearing but caused inflamed breakouts. By switching to products that unclogged her pores instead, her skin was clear in less than 3 months.
Skincare products caused both inflamed and non-inflamed acne in Qenna's skin. To get her acne under control, she used Mandelic Serum to unclog her pores, and Benzoyl Peroxide to kill the bacteria causing her inflammation. Her cleanser, moisturizer, and sunscreen were all non-clogging.
Qenna struggled with her skin for years. When she finally used the right products for her acne-prone skin, her skin was clear and smooth in 11 weeks.
Could beauty products be causing your breakouts?
Here's a list of the most common clogging ingredients I see in skin care products. Note that this is not the complete list, which has over 100 clogging ingredients. But if you find any of these in your products (even one), they are most likely causing your breakouts.
Sodium Laurel or Sodium Laureth Sulfate
Shea Butter
Coconut Oil, Coconut Alkanes or Coconut Butter
Ethylhexyl Palmitate
Isopropyl Myristate
Isopropyl Palmitate
Cetearyl Alcohol + Ceteareth 20 (both have to be listed on the label to be clogging)
Avacado, Soybean, Apricot, Argan, Olive or Vegetable Oil
D & C Red #30, #36, #17, #21, Or #3
Algae, Kelp, Seaweed, Or Chondrus Crispus

To get the results Qenna did, it starts with using the right products! Check your labels and eliminate any with clogging ingredients.
