The Most Important Thing: Your Acne Triggers

I met a mom who'd spent over $50,000 trying to treat her daughter's acne. Dermatologists, specialists, medications, products—you name it, they tried it.

The result? Her daughter still has acne.

In my 18 years as an acne expert, I've heard this kind of story over and over again. The reason so many “acne treatments” fail is that most doctors and professionals miss one critical step: identifying the root causes of acne so that they can be removed.

Here's the most important thing to understand about acne:
You can use the best skincare products, follow the cleanest diet, and do everything right—but if you don't remove your acne triggers, your skin won't clear up.

And that's exactly what happened to the girl in this story.

So, What is Causing Your Acne?

Shockingly, it's usually something so simple. It's often a trigger as small as your shampoo, protein shake, or daily multivitamin. And most of the time, it's clogging ingredients in your skin care products that your acne professional should recognize, but doesn't.

Another new client had been working with her dermatologist for 10 years, and her skin was a mess when I met her. She told me it's never been clear in those 10 years, and she'd given up hope that it ever would be. She'd even tried Accutane twice.

When she went through my “acne interview” process, I saw that her dermatologist was recommending a moisturizer with clogging ingredients in it. We switched her to the right products for her skin, and 6 weeks later, her skin already looks much better. It should be completely clear in about 12 weeks.

I could share endless stories, but here are just a few other examples of what I've seen:

  • A woman whose breakouts were caused by a single pore-clogging ingredient in her makeup.

  • An athlete whose acne came from the supplements he was taking after workouts.

  • A teenager whose acne was caused by daily energy drinks.

  • A mom whose skin cleared up when she changed her makeup brush cleanser.

  • A teenager who cut back drinking (too much) milk and his skin cleared up.

When I have a new client, I use what I call The Acne Interview—a process I've developed to pinpoint exactly what's causing your acne, based on how you answer specific questions. I also share this process with other professionals to help them get better results for their clients.

After just a few questions and three photos of your skin, I can tell you—with 100% certainty—what's standing between you and clear skin.

Sometimes, the answer is so simple it's almost hard to believe. But once the trigger is removed and the right products are used? Most of my clients see clear skin in just 12 weeks.
